Yeshua looks around the city square. Wealthy moneychangers call out from the temple steps while children in tattered rags steal their customers’ coin. Women saunter through the crowds, offering their own special rates. Old men squat in filth and humiliation, hands outstretched for the crumbs others may or may not deign to drop.
The small crowd in front of Yeshua looks up at him expectantly. He has taught them about forgiveness, about repentance, about their rewards in the afterlife, and that’s what he had planned for this time too.
“Burn it down,” he says. “Burn it all down.”
The prompt for this story is from my writing group: “Write a story based on a song that could be set in an alternate reality.” I chose “I Am One” by The Smashing Pumpkins.
